2025 at the Broome Bird Observatory

New Beginnings: Welcome to BBO 2025!

As the pindan soil turns a deeper red in the morning light and migratory shorebirds grace the shores of Roebuck Bay, we're thrilled to announce an exciting new chapter at Broome Bird Observatory. The year 2025 brings fresh energy and leadership to our beloved observatory with the arrival of our new Wardens, Jamie Van Jones and Sebastian Jones. We would like to thank Matt for being the BBO Warden for 2024, and wish him all the best as he fly’s off on a new adventyre!

Broome Bird Observatory Wardens

Jamie Van Jones brings a passionate eye for both birds and photography to BBO. With a background in environmental conservation. She brings an impressive background in expedition guiding across all seven continents. Jamie's exceptional ability to connect people with wildlife and landscapes has earned remarkable recognition, including being named both Western Australia's and Australia's Top Tour Guide in 2022. This prestigious achievement reflects Jamie's dedication to creating meaningful nature experiences and their genuine passion for wildlife, particularly birds. Jamie's enthusiasm for conservation and eco-tourism promises to enhance BBO's mission of research, education, and community engagement.

Alongside Jamie, we're excited to welcome Sebastian Jones, whose rich background in adventure and nature brings an incredible wealth of experience to BBO. From sailing the vast Pacific Ocean and Western Australian coastline to leading wildlife expeditions across Indonesia, the Kimberley, Antarctica, and the Arctic. His connection with birds began uniquely – as a young surfer watching gannets dive-bombing for fish while waiting for the next wave. This early fascination blossomed into a lifelong passion for birdwatching, complemented by his extensive knowledge of geology and ecology. Sebastian's diverse experience in nature guiding and his infectious enthusiasm for sharing knowledge makes him an invaluable addition to our team, ready to help visitors discover the wonders of Roebuck Bay's extraordinary ecosystem. Together, they will oversee our dedicated team of assistant wardens and campground hosts who help maintain our world-class research facility and welcoming accommodation for visitors.

As we enter our 37th year of operation, our commitment to research, education, and conservation remains stronger than ever. Under this new leadership, we look forward to continuing our vital work:

  • Monitoring the incredible migratory shorebirds of Roebuck Bay

  • Maintaining our comprehensive Bird Log database

  • Hosting educational programs and community events

  • Providing unique eco-tourism experiences that connect people with nature

We invite you to join us in 2025 for our popular activities, including the "Wave the Waders Goodbye" migration watches, guided birdwatching tours, and our 4night 5 day Birding Retreats/Courses. Whether you're a seasoned birder or a curious newcomer, there's something for everyone at BBO.

Stay tuned for exciting new initiatives and programs that Jamie and Sebastian will be introducing throughout the year. They look forward to sharing their passion for birds and conservation with you in 2025 and beyond.
