Sightings - October 2021
30 October
A Little Ringed Plover continues to be seen at Lake Eda along with good numbers of Long-toed Stint and other shorebirds (CJH and KH). An Arctic migrant Peregrine Falcon was seen at Lake Campion (NJ). A Leaden Flycatcher and Hooded Robin were seen in woodland north of Tagarana Bore, while a Cattle Egret was seen among large numbers of Australian White Ibis at the bore itself.
28 October
A Little Ringed Plover and Oriental Pratincole were seen at Lake Eda.
26 October
An Eastern Koel continues to call on Lullfitz Drive.
23 October
An Eastern Koel continues to call on Lullfitz Drive (AB).
22 October
An Eastern Koel continues to call on Lullfitz Drive (LB).
21 October
An Eastern Koel was heard calling along Lullfitz Drive in Cable Beach (JC). A Peregrine Falcon of the Arctic migratory group (ssp. calidus/japonensis) was seen on a communications tower on the Great Northern Highway, opposite the turnoff for Eco Beach Resort. A Black-eared Cuckoo was seen in woodland near Tagarana Bore.
20 October
A Yellow-billed Spoonbill continues to be seen at Lake Campion.
19 October
A Bridled Tern was seen along the northern shores of Roebuck Bay (SS).
18 October
The first Oriental Cuckoo of the season was seen over the Broome sewage works (SS). Broad-billed Sandpipers and a Beach Stone-curlew was seen among thousands of other shorebirds along Roebuck Bay’s northern shores. An Oriental Dollarbird pair were at Tagarana Bore, while a small flock of Yellow Chats were seen in the saltmarsh around Kidneybean Claypan.
17 October
Two Common Terns were seen at Richard’s Point in northern Roebuck Bay (AB). A Yellow-billed Spoonbill was seen with 15 Royal Spoonbills at Lake Campion, where a Peregrine Falcon was also present, while an Eastern Yellow Wagtail was seen at Taylor’s Lagoon (CM). A superb turnout for our second annual community birdwatching morning were rewarded with great views of Broad-billed Flycatcher, Far Eastern Curlew, Sanderling, Black-necked Stork and White-bellied Sea-Eagle from our Viewing Platform, with Rufous-throated Honeyeater and White-gaped Honeyeater spotted in the bush.
16 October
The first juvenile White-winged Black Tern of the season was seen at the Broome sewage works (AB).
14 October
A juvenile GOULDIAN FINCH (third record for Broome) was seen coming to drink with Long-tailed Finches at Lake Campion. Two Yellow Chats and a Black-breasted Buzzard were also seen there. The first returned Oriental Pratincole of the season was at Lake Eda along with a Long-toed Stint, Common Tern (unusual inland record) and 35 Little Curlew. Five Yellow Chats and 40 Oriental Plovers were seen around Taylor’s Lagoon.
12 October
The first juvenile Bar-tailed Godwit of the season was seen in Roebuck Bay (KH). An Eastern Yellow Wagtail was at the Broome sewage works, while an Oriental Dollarbird was seen on Hopton Street in Broome (AB).
11 October
A Semipalmated/Ringed Plover was seen again from the BBO Viewing Platform on the incoming tide (AB).
10 October
A Semipalmated/Ringed Plover continues to be seen on the BBO Beach at low tide, this time moving away to the east as the tide came in (LB and AB). A CHESTNUT-BREASTED MANNIKIN and continuing Common Redshank and Yellow Chats were at Taylor’s Lagoon. Four Long-toed Stints were at Lake Campion.
9 October
An Asian Dowitcher and Barn Swallow were seen on a Mangrove Tour at Little Crab Creek. A returned Oriental Dollarbird was on the all-weather section of Crab Creek Road.
8 October
An Eastern Yellow Wagtail and Wood Sandpiper were seen at the Broome sewage works.
7 October
A Semipalmated/Ringed Plover continues to be seen on the BBO Beach (NJ). The bird has been feeding in this area, in front of BBO, on incoming tides, before moving west to roost as the tide comes in. The first juvenile Pacific Golden Plover of the season was seen at Entrance Point. An Eastern Yellow Wagtail was at the Broome sewage works.
6 October
A Semipalmated/Ringed Plover continues to be seen on the BBO Beach, while a single Flock Bronzewing continues at Lake Campion (GS). A Common Redshank (rare inland record), five Varied Lorikeets and at least three Yellow Chats were at Taylor’s Lagoon. Ninety-four Little Curlew were seen at Lake Eda in the middle of the day.
5 October
A continuing Semipalmated/Ringed Plover was seen on the BBO Beach this morning as the tide came in (DA). Common Terns were seen at Wader and Quarry beaches (NJ and GS). A Black Falcon was at Little Crab Creek. The first juvenile Sanderling of the season was seen on Wader Beach.
4 October
A SEMIPALMATED/RINGED PLOVER was found at Wader Beach this morning among a large mixed shorebird roost, also holding many Broad-billed Sandpipers and a Little Curlew. Returning Oriental Dollarbirds were seen along the Broome Highway (KH) and around the BBO grounds. A Magpie Goose and three Long-toed Stints were at Crescent Lake in the afternoon.
3 October
A returning Barn Swallow was seen at Lake Campion, along with two Yellow Chats, a Little Eagle, Flock Bronzewing and three Long-toed Stints (BG).
2 October
A single Eastern Yellow Wagtail was at the Broome sewage works.
