BBO Developed Resources
Broome Bird Observatory shorebird activities (level: grade 2 - grade 4, however can be easily modified for younger or older children)
This multi-disciplinary resource was created by the BBO to assist those learning from home during the COVID-19 pandemic. These lesson plans have a range of activities, however we have not included time break-downs for each activity so for a school-setting an educator will be able to assess how long an activity should go for. Most of these activities can easily be differentiated for different year levels and would work well in a broader ‘bird’, ‘shorebird’, ‘animal migration’ or ‘science’ curriculum.

Shorebird ID skills (level: pre-primary/ kindergarten)
The BBO use this resource when working with young students, pre-primary and/or kindergarten aged children.
This resource develops the understanding of the key principles to identifying shorebirds as students learn to look at the shorebirds outline and compare this with their field guide or ID booklet. Students render the shorebird outlines to match the shorebird they find in their ID booklet. The activity sheet can be found here.
We advise to use this activity with the BirdLife Australia Shorebird Identification Booklet. A PDF version of the booklet can be found here but we find it more effective when students use the physical booklet themselves or one between two.
